The creation of the University of Pécs was first initiated by King Louis the Great in 1367. Today, the University of Pécs is one of the most prestigious institutions in the country, where there are ten faculties, which cover the full spectrum of higher education to provide high quality, comprehensive training. In addition to the education and research activities, medical treatment is a crucial activity of ours; the Clinical Centre takes care of not only of the region’s outpatients and in-patients, but in many areas has national-level duties, too.
Each year, the University of Pécs participates in the ranking of international higher education institutions and is doing well. We strive to further improve our perception in all areas.
We have and will put great emphasis on the quality of education, as well-prepared students mean the best publicity for us. In this spirit the continuous development of human resources and infrastructure conditions is our top priority. We make efforts to provide our students with a wide variety of knowledge, therefore we offer support for a significant proportion of our students to participate in a variety of internship and exchange programmes in recognized institutions of Europe and other developed countries. So that we can increase the level of education we use state of the art technology and invite the finest professors. We have taken our motto from Luis Pasteur: "chance favours the prepared mind". It is most pleasing, that the number of students has stabilized over the last decade, whereas the number of foreign students has grown significantly. Not only is the University of Pécs a prestigious institution, it is also student-friendly; we would like our student to study for achievement and have a good time as well.
The PTE conducts internationally recognized research work. We do our best to make our university an optimal choice for a workplace to our talented researchers, not just a starting point. We encourage our esteemed colleagues with internal grant schemes for an even better performance. In the research centre named after János Szentágothai there are cutting-edge technologies, equipment and tools at our researchers’ and students’ disposal. The main research profile of our University is basic scientific research, however, via applied research we continuously develop our industrial relationships, too.
Within the framework of the Modern Cities Programme, spectacular modernization is taking place at our university. In this context not only are there construction of new buildings and renovation of existing ones, but these activities are parallel with human resources training. The Modern Cities Programme was created in cooperation with the city of Pécs.
Pécs is an attractive, friendly little town and human in scale; not only does it host, but also serves like home for our university citizens. The University is the city’s dominant institution, besides the students almost all inhabitants of Pécs feel connected to it. The presence of the large number of international students from all over the world and the Mediterranean atmosphere makes Pécs a pleasant, busy university town with so much life. The University of Pécs however, is not restricted to the county seat of Baranya, there is an independent faculty in the town of Szekszárd and there is a network of training centres all over the Transdanubian region, beyond the borders even.
The Rector’s leadership invites efficient cooperation of the various faculties and employees, encourages disciplined work of our students and calls on the support of those with an interest in its work.

Student Life
The University has transformed Pécs into a Univer-city. With Faculties spread all over and no one particular campus, students may find it difficult to make friends with those from faculties other than the one they are studying at, but with over 4500 international students studying in the city of Pécs it’s never hard to run into someone at the library, a party or just walking around.
Despite Faculties being spread throughout the city, most things are within walking distance and if not, the public transport system is very reliable. Monthly bus passes are reasonably priced, especially if you use your student card. The city is in general has a low cost of living compared to most other European countries and is safe.
Many students may find it difficult adjusting to life away from home, particularly those who are coming straight from high school and have never lived on their own. For these students, it is recommended they live in the dorms for the first year as they adapt to life in a new place and studying at University. The dorms are a great place to meet friends and can be a safe place for students who overwhelmed with all the new responsibilities of living abroad.
Pécs is much smaller than Budapest and has much less nightlife than Miami Beach, but Pécs provides more than enough for students to do. There are cinemas where you can see movies in English or Hungarian, and plenty of bars and restaurants. There’s Árkád for all your shopping needs, if you’re not satisfied with what’s available there’s always online shopping.
Traveling to Budapest for a weekend is always a great idea. You can see the monuments and enjoy the city with friends. Students also enjoy traveling to countries within the region like Croatia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Austria.
Testimonials from our Internationla Students:
“I like the international climate at the University of Pécs, here people from all over the world come together and it's a great place to get to know new cultures and make new friends. The professors at the Medical School are outstanding and we get a lot of practical experience and contact with patients. This place has taught me so much about myself and I consider it a great honor to be a student here.”
Lena Luise Popp, Germany
'I've found a second home!' Studying in the University of Pecs has exposed me to such a vast pool of resources, both academically and socially. I get to be taught by very nice and experienced professors.
I also get to learn new cultures and make friends from all over the world."
Joshua Wanbua, Kenya
“I never get bored living and studying in Pecs. The city is charming and not crowded, together with many unexpected multi-cultural activities in the city center for me to experience. Life in the Campus is wonderful, and it has quite big international community. The professors, teachers and staffs of the University are also extremely adorable."
Phet Sengpunya, Laos
'"Here it's where you can rediscover yourself! My experience has been amazing so far as an international student at UP. I found the fruitful interaction between the professors and students I was seeking for and the professors are tolerant, flexible and understanding. The international atmosphere is gorgeous where you can deal with a lot of students from all over the globe. Pécs is a calm city with such a beautiful nature and weather. I believe that it's an experience that will lead me to great achievements in the near future."
Ahmed Hamido, Egypt
"Studying at the heart of Europe was a chance to travel and discover different surrounding countries and to participate in exchange programs. Honestly, studying in Pécs was the best decision I’ve ever made, I discovered myself, improved my skills and gained personal and professional growth."
Ghada Bouajaja, Tunisia
