Student Life

A place to study with joy

SFU campus is located next to one of Vienna’s largest recreational areas, so there are of course a lot of sports and outdoor activities straight at hand. Since our international programmes comprise nearly 50% of the students in Psychotherapy Science and Psychology, there is already a huge international student community on campus. Even more, we are also neighboring the vast university centre of the Vienna University of Economics and Business, so there is an abundance of bustling social life going on in the vicinity. Our well organized student’s union frequently organizes events and welcome meetings on top of the programs offered by the university. Last but not least, Vienna in itself is a top tourist destination in itself, with visitors coming for culture, art and the imperial flair.

Q: What is the difference between psychotherapy science and psychology?
A: Psychology is more oriented towards understanding human behavior in general (e.g. business or social psychology), psychotherapy aims at helping the individual by understanding its unique experience of life and offering avenues to change and self-empowerment. While clinical psychology (as another specialisation of psychology) also provides help with the hardships of life, it uses a more standardized approach (like tests, pre-structured interviews etc.).

Q: Since the university is named after Sigmund Freud, is psychonalysis the only branch of psychotherapy offered?
A: No, SFU provides its students with extensive knowledge about all branches / schools of psychotherapy and offers the full range of specialisations for their dedicated vocational training (e.g. systemic, Gestalt therapy, cognitive-behavioral etc...).
