Study at the Premier Healthcare and Humanistic University in Austria

Sigmund Freud Private University (SFU) was founded in Vienna in 2003 and is now the largest private university in Austria with additional campuses in Paris, Berlin, Milan, Ljubljana and Linz. SFU was the first university worldwide to develop
an academic degree programme in Psychotherapy Science, following Freud’s vision of psychotherapy as an academic profession. With Psychology as a logical addition and later Medicine and Law, the portfolio was steadily broadened. SFU’s clinics contribute to psychosocial care at their respective locations, its institutes provide cutting-edge international research.

SFU offers German and English-language Bachelorʼs, Masterʼs and Doctoral programmes in Psychotherapy Science and Psychology. Full degree programs in Medicine and Dentistry as well as law (LL.B. and LL.M.) are offered only in German. Beyond acquiring the whole gamut of professional skills, special emphasis is placed on personality development as part of the university’s self-image as a humanistic institution. Aptitude and professional inclinations are already determined during the admission procedure and taken into account accordingly in career counselling. The SFU operates several psychotherapeutic and psychological outpatient clinics where internships can be completed. For the practical training of future dentists, a dental clinic is available on the medical campus. Numerous university courses enable postgraduate, interest-specific further education at an academic level.

Student Life

A Place to Study with Pleasure

SFU campus is located next to one of Vienna’s largest recreational areas - the Prater amusement park - so there are a lot of sports and outdoor activities for students to try out and experience. Since about 50% of the students in Psychotherapy Science and Psychology are ernolled in international programs, SFU already has a vibrant international student community on campus. What's more, we are also right beside the vast university campus of the Vienna University of Economics and Business, so there is a bustling social life within the vicinity. Our well organized student union frequently organizes events and welcome meetings on top of those offered by the university. Last but not least, Vienna is not only a top tourist destination - with visitors coming for culture, art and the imperial flair - but also the city with the best quality of life, consistently ranked number one in the last 12 years (Mercer, Forbes, The Economist).

FAQs

Q: What are the academic requirements for studying Psychotherapy Science or Psychology at SFU?
A: You find the detailed informations on the following web pages:
> link Psychotherapy Science
> link Psychology

Q: Do I need a visa to study at SFU in Austria?
A: Citizens of countries outside the European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA) need a Student Stay Permit or "Aufenthaltsbewilligung - Student"  in order to study in Austria. This rule applies to nationals of countries which currently have visa-free entry to Austria (e.g. the West Balkan countries, USA, South Korea, Japan, etc.). The visa-free period is limited to only 90 days out of 180 days, and not having a residence or stay permit will interrupt semester studies. Please contact Admissions@sfu.ac.at for questions regarding immigration regulations for students.

Q: When do I apply for a Student Stay Permit and entry visa?
A: You should apply for an Austria student stay permit at least 3-4 months before the semester begins. You may only apply for an entry visa after your student stay permit application has been approved. Non-EU / non-EEA citizens must therefore apply for admission and be officially offered a place much earlier than EU / EEA citizens.

Q: What is the difference between psychotherapy science and psychology?
A: Psychology is oriented more towards understanding human behavior in general (e.g. business or social psychology), while psychotherapy focuses on helping the individual by understanding their unique experience of life and offering avenues to change and self-empowerment. While clinical psychology (as another specialisation of psychology) also provides help with the hardships of life, it uses a more standardized approach (like tests, pre-structured interviews, etc.).

Q: Since the university is named after Sigmund Freud, is psychonalysis the only branch of psychotherapy offered?
A: No, SFU provides its students with extensive knowledge about all branches / schools of psychotherapy and offers the full range of specialisations for their dedicated vocational training (e.g. systemic, Gestalt therapy, cognitive-behavioral etc...).
