As a major Hungarian education institution with campuses in close proximity to three European capitals and unspoiled areas of natural beauties, University of Sopron aspires to become a key player in international higher education and research.
The legal predecessors of University of Sopron have a long history with the oldest one dating back to 1735 when the School for Training Mining Officers was founded in Selmecbánya. Located beside the Austrian border, in the “Most Loyal City” of Hungary, our university provides excellent education at four faculties specialising in forestry, wood technology, pedagogy and economics.
The aim of University of Sopron is to train intelligent and creative professionals for the future, ones keeping in mind the principles of sustainability in their profession and in their private lives.
The operation of the institution in the form of a foundation as of August 1, 2020 — in addition to maintaining state-subsidized academic programmes — further expands the opportunities for our students to acquire the knowledge of their future profession from the point of view of practical life.
Our academic offer includes 58 programmes in 8 fields of study. We conduct our programmes according to the European Qualifications Framework of the Bologna Process; All programmes have been accredited by the Hungarian Accreditation Committee. We offer students competitive knowledge and skills via project-based and experience-based learning environment.
The campus is located in a nature conservation area, the Botanical Garden, which also serves instructional purposes with its collection of living plants.
The academic and intellectual values our faculties espouse are intertwined with the city’s long history, its historical, landscape, and cultural values. For Sopron graduates, the years spent here are usually the highlight of their lives. Keeping Selmec student traditions alive has earned our successor institution a great recognition: in 2014, our traditions were added to the Hungarian National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Through its development programmes in education, research, excellence, and competitiveness, University of Sopron intends to strengthen its leading national and regional leadership in various fields of education and science. The university’s international relations play an important role in achieving these goals, which are typically organized around the two basic activities and provide the framework for educational and research collaborations.
Our university has partnered with over 150 European institutions to ensure mobility cooperation opportunities for staff (teaching and training) and students (studies and traineeships). The university has established contractual relationships with nearly 50 other foreign institutions in the realms of cooperation in research and publication, exchange of scientific materials and information, and organization of joint training programmes.
In connection with its goals of internationalization, University of Sopron continuously promotes the principles of environmental awareness, equal opportunities, and social responsibility.
